Text: Psalm 40:1,2
1I waited patiently for the LORD;
And He inclined to me and heard my cry.
2He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,
And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.
These verses remind us of the helplessness of the soul as it struggles in futility against the mud bog of sin. The more it struggles to free its self the more it gets sucked down. Many have wandered into the miry clay of sin expecting that they could roll up their pant’s legs and avoid getting their garments dirty. Soon they find themselves covered head to toe unable to remove themselves. Whatever pleasures tempted them to go down to the mire has now left them with only distress.
The verses remind us of God the Saviour and of His might. How He listens to His people and hears their cries. Not only hears their distress but acts, bringing them out of the pit, plucking them from out the miry clay, and setting their feet upon the rock. Once the soul was unsure in it’s steps because of sin, but now it’s footsteps are made firm. Praise Christ Jesus, the rock of such a salvation!
